Irony - who would have thought California would be dripping in it? What are the chances of your Disneyland bus catching on fire right in front of Anaheim Fire Station and only five minutes away from your hotel after spending almost 24 hours travelling from Sydney? Whatever the odds, we came up with the flaming bus just one hour into our American adventure. How will Canada top this?
At least it wasn't snowing. We were worried that we'd lose our luggage but that escaped with only minor fume odours. Everyone on the bus escaped unscathed. A passenger at the back alerted the driver that smoke was starting to enter the rear of the bus. We pulled over and people started to leave through the front door. It actually takes quite some time to get 40 odd people off a bus but everybody was fine.
We eventually got out as the smoke filled bus and were soon joined by numerous fire engines and policemen, one of whom was kind enough to take my photo in front of a squad car with the smouldering bus and fire engine in the background. LAPD - very obliging! The only down side to this trip highlight is that Jordan has developed a degree of paranoia about buses in general and now worries about our home and any number of other landmarks catching alight. He's also become extraordinarily homesick and is missing his own home, his own bed and non combustible Australian buses.
